The Summer of the Soul: Artist Talk with Cagla Demirbas, Maike Bergold & Ronja Falkenbach

The first artist talk will bring together Cagla Demirbas, Maike Bergold, and Ronja Falkenbach to explore the themes of subculture, youth, and intimacy to look at the intersection of such themes through their work. Demirbas’ series uses mimesis to explore the ways in which relationships can be both close and distant, Bergold’s visual diary pushes her to come into terms with her vulnerability, and Falkenbach’s photographs capture the transnational phenomenon of electronic music and its scene in Seoul.

Reclaiming the Postmemory: Artist Talk with Alejandra Arévalo, Phuong Hoang & Verónica Losantos

The talk will include Alejandra Arévalo, Phuong Hoang and Verónica Losantos and take their work departing from history as a the centre of discussion. All three of the artists reimagined artifacts of history in the most broad sense, and brought them to our current times with the help of an intensive research process. Arévalo investigates the collective memory of Vietnamese rice workers in Marseille and sheds a light on the French colonial history, Hoang challenges the boundaries of reality with the multiverse hypothesis, and Losantos narrates the story of a flooded Spanish village from the 60s and its ultimate relocation.

Identity as a Form of Protest: Artist Talk with Despoina “Penny” Demertzi (Poetic Narrative Performance), Francesca Hummler, Jack Moyse & Jesse Egner (Moderator: Diren Demir)
The final artist talk will feature Despoina “Penny” Demertzi, Francesca Hummler,
Jack Moyse and Jesse Egner. The artists will discuss the exploration of their identities in their bodies of work and how they utilize it as a tool of protest for the continuous negotiation of identity in both public and private spheres. Demertzi’s poetic narrative performance reveals her as a synesthete whose body gestates the metamorphosis of the interrelation between empathy and class consciousness, Hummler’s work depicts her identity within her family’s structure and how the experiences of older generations have shaped her, Moyse’s self-portraits show the impact of muscular dystrophy has on his physical and mental health, and Egner’s photographers offers fragmented narratives of queer identity that exist between reality and fantasy.
