In The Dark

January 5 - February 4

Solo Exhibition

In their recent artistic endeavors on canvas, Natthanpong Samakkaew has expanded upon their previous drawings, merging them with new environments such as woodlands or dreamscapes. This marks a novel exploration and experimental approach to their work.
Utilizing natural raw canvas as their medium, Samakkaew employed dark red acrylic paint to infuse a sense of depth and richness into the evolving narrative of their artwork. The series of small paintings that began in the clubs and dark rooms of Berlin, where people could freely realize all their desires, have now manifested themselves in these large scale paintings in which this drawing research has been furthered. The paintings reflect the iconography of anonymous bodies and anonymous desires that Samakkaew witnessed. These iconogrophic lines, created by Samakkaew and developed in dark rooms, are presented together with tones that evoke body structure and skin.

Natthapong Samakkaew is a visual artist. He was born in Krabi, Thailand and lives in Berlin, Germany. In 2018, he received his BA in Illustration at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany with the dissertation ‘Move your body’ in which he drew people in darkrooms in Berlin. His dissertation received the best experiment award at the university’s annual prize. His drawing practice focuses on visual representations of observation and experience. He has been a member of the un.thai.tled collective. He has exhibited his work at the National Art Center Tokyo, Hamburger Bahnhof, Projektraum 145, Artburst Berlin, BBK Leipzig e.V., Leipzig, Aquamediale 13 Art Festival and 48 Stunden Neukölln.
